HISTORY OF THE NEWT IN SOMERSET

The Newt in Somerset is a Grade II*-listed structure that was formerly known as Hadspen House. The first farmer’s home was constructed between 1687 and 1690, and the garden was planned and started in 1691. In 1785, a lawyer by the name of Henry Hobhouse II bought Hadspen House.

He gave the main house its current Georgian façade. Which is made of local limestone. His successors redesigned the grounds for the following 200 years, adding more naturalistic parkland. The Hobhouse family owned the property until 2013.

DESIGN OF THE NEWT IN SOMERSET

The hotel’s interior design is the work of Karen Roos who is the former editor of Elle Decoration. The Parabola and the main house are two examples of original constructions that have lasted for centuries.

While some structures, like the Threshing Barn and Spa, are modelled after traditional farming buildings, others, like the glass-walled Garden Café, are of more modern design.

Elegant main house rooms at the hotel have been renovate with a new, fun style. The historic horse yard buildings at The Stable Yard have been converted into elegant, flexible accommodation while maintaining their original features.

There are 23 different-style bedrooms spread out across the main house and its Stable Yard. There are 13 bedrooms in the main house and 10 in the stable yard and 4 of them have kitchen facilities.
