Sir John Betjeman described Clevedon Pier as “delicate as a Japanese print in the mist, and like an insect in the sunlight.” Its construction was particularly difficult due to the 47-foot tidal range – the second highest in the world – and because of this it was built unusually high at 68 feet. Discarded wrought iron railway lines were formed into eight, 100ft arched spans standing on trestles. Clevedon is one of the only piers in the country to charge a toll and be managed by a Pier Mistress. It was designated a Grade I listed building by English Heritage in 2001.
