Sandown Culver Pier has enjoyed the attentions of many illustrious visitors in its 244 year history: Earl Mountbatten, governor of the Isle of Wight and Admiral of the Fleet, carried out an official re-opening ceremony on 22 July 1973, the Queen has strolled along its boardwalks and a host of popular entertainers, such as Julie Andrews and Tony Hancock are said to have started their careers at the pier’s theatre.
