Despite its length, some pier enthusiasts argue that Lowestoft South Pier is not a pier at all because it doesn’t have any ‘legs’ so visitors cannot walk over the water.  It is a mainly concrete construction and has been called a ‘breakwater enclosing the harbour.’ In 2008 the pier underwent a major refurbishment programme and it now describes itself as an all-encompassing family entertainment complex.
