Lowestoft South Pier, Suffolk

Lowestoft South Pier, Suffolk, June 2012

Spans:North Sea
Design:Sir Martin Pete
Year opened:1846
Original length:403m
Present length:403m
Restoration:1949/50, 1988

Despite its length, some pier enthusiasts argue that Lowestoft South Pier is not a pier at all because it doesn’t have any ‘legs’ so visitors cannot walk over the water.  It is a mainly concrete construction and has been called a ‘breakwater enclosing the harbour.’ In 2008 the pier underwent a major refurbishment programme and it now describes itself as an all-encompassing family entertainment complex.
