Felixstowe Pier, Suffolk
|Construction:||Timber, concrete decking|
The pier opened in August 1905 with a length of 2,973ft (making it the third longest in the UK) and incorporated a 3 foot 6 inch gauge electric tramway that transported passengers to the pier head until service was suspended at the outbreak of World War II, never to be resumed. The proximity of the Port of Felixstowe shipping lanes accounts for navigation lights at the head of the pier. The owners recently announced ambitious plans to build a futuristic structure at an estimated cost of £15m. A similar scheme in 1996 failed to materialize.
