The Victoria Pier (renamed ‘South’ Pier in 1930) opened on Good Friday 1893 to the accompaniment of a 50-piece orchestra, a choir and two brass bands. The Grand Pavilion was damaged by fire in 1954 and 1958 before being destroyed by a third fire in 1964. It was rebuilt within twelve weeks. In 1998, the theatre was demolished to make way for a big dipper and other white knuckle rides, which now dominate the pier.
